Vegetable Farmers Warn of Food Shortage as Developers, Galamseyers Take Over Farmlands

Vegetable farmers in the Ashanti Region are raising alarm over the increasing encroachment on their farmlands by private developers and illegal miners, a situation they say is threatening vegetable production and food security.

The concern was highlighted during a visit by the Angle FM News team to the Peace and Love Vegetable Home at Atonsu Gyenyase.

Speaking to the media, John Yeboah, Chairman of the group, said that land around water-rock areas suitable for vegetable farming is being filled for housing projects.

He therefore urged the government to intervene and ensure proper measures are taken to protect farmland especially from illegal mining activities to avoid a shortage of food in the years ahead.

The secretary of the Association, Adjei Douglas warned that if urgent action is not taken by the government and relevant authorities, Ghana may soon be forced to import vegetables due to the shortage of fertile land for agriculture.
Stating that when much concentration is given to vegetable farming, it would create more employment for many citizens in the country.
