SUWMA Champions Ghanaian Cuisine with Local Food Competition in Kumasi

As part of activities marking Ghana Month, the Susana Wesley Mission Auxiliary (SUWMA) of the Kumasi North Diocese has organized a local food competition to promote the consumption of indigenous Ghanaian dishes.

The colorful event, held at the Kwadaso Methodist Church in Kumasi, brought together 21 SUWMA groups from various circuits across the Ashanti Region, each showcasing a variety of traditional meals.

Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the programme, the Diocesan Chairperson, Mrs. Esi Sakyi Appiah, explained that the initiative was aimed at educating the public on the importance of embracing local foods.

According to her, Ghanaian dishes are not only nutritious but also play a vital role in preserving the country’s cultural identity.

“We want to tell the world the importance of our local foods. These meals are healthy and part of who we are as a people,” she said.

Some SUWMA executives also emphasized the health benefits of regularly preparing local dishes at home, noting that home-cooked meals are often more nutritious compared to frequently buying food from outside.

They further advised parents to pay close attention to the feeding habits of their children, stressing that proper nutrition is key to their growth and overall well-being.

The competition formed part of SUWMA’s efforts to promote healthy living and encourage Ghanaians to take pride in their local cuisine.
