Residents Gripped by Fear After Soldiers Raid Galamsey Sites at Kunsu

Fear and tension have gripped residents of Kunsu in the Ahafo Ano South West District of the Ashanti Region following a military operation against illegal mining activities in the area on Saturday, January 17.

Soldiers on the anti-galamsey taskforce stormed the Odoyefe illegal mining site near the community, where they destroyed several items believed to be used by galamsey operators.

Eyewitness accounts indicate that more than ten motorbikes were set on fire during the operation, alongside other mining equipment found at the site.

One suspected illegal miner was arrested, while many others fled into the surrounding bush to avoid apprehension.

Although the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal mining and protect the environment, the intensity of the soldiers’ actions has left many residents in fear, with some expressing concern about safety and uncertainty over possible future raids in the area.
