Ezilinbo Residents Express Frustration Over Uncompleted Forward Operating Base and Unpaid Compensation
Residents of Ezilinbo in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region have voiced their disappointment with the government’s decision to commission accommodations for the Forward Operating Base (FOB) before completing the main project. The base, built for the Ghana Navy, is aimed at enhancing maritime security and reducing response times to incidents within Ghana’s western maritime domain.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has officially commissioned the FOB today, Monday, December 23, 2024. The base is expected to bolster the Ghana Navy’s capacity to protect the nation’s offshore oil resources and maritime boundaries, especially following Ghana’s 2017 victory in the maritime boundary dispute with Côte d’Ivoire.
The Ezilinbo FOB is part of a broader government initiative to strengthen Ghana’s military capabilities and safeguard its security and economic interests. However, residents are deeply frustrated that their compensations for lands used in constructing the base remain unresolved. They expressed concerns about the uncertainty surrounding payment, even as the commissioning ceremony proceeds.
Some residents, speaking to our reporter Nana Fynn, revealed that despite promises made during the initial phases of the project, no compensation has been paid to affected landowners. Their frustrations have grown, given that the main project is far from completion, and their lands remain unaccounted for.
