Ministry of Local Government Partners with UNFP to Engage Faith-based Organisations on Gender-based Violence Issues

The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund, has engaged faith-based organisations to educate them on how to effectively address gender-based violence and social norms in various societies.

During the engagement, the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mr Richard Obeng Boafo explained that the purpose behind this gathering is to educate these religious groups on the rising awareness of gender-based violence, which is commonly found among women, girls, and the issue of child marriage.

He continues that with a collective effort from the various stakeholders, it would help them get various ideas to advocate for the prevention of violence against all genders especially women and girls, and also focus on addressing critical issues such as child marriage.

Mr Richard Obeng Boafo emphasised that, since the various religious group plays a vital role in our societies and the country at large and are now part of the ministry, they needed to get them on board and strategise how best to end child marriage and promote gender equity.

The Deputy Director of the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs stressed how these faith-based organisations can use their platforms to advocate for change among these issues of gender-based violence and child marriage.

Barima Ogyeabour Amankwah Adunan II, Kuntenasehene, who chaired the occasion, expressed worry about how the issue of gender-based violence and child marriage is affecting the country silently.

He called for the need for all to actively contribute the best in the fight against gender-based violence and child marriage among women and girls.

The General Secretary for the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), Apostle Immanuel Tettey commended the ministry for this insightful education given to them and pledged their support by using their various platforms to educate the congregation on the issues of gender-based violence and child marriage.
