Fish Prices Rise at Elmina Fishing Market as We Enter Into The Christmas Season
Fishermen and fishmongers in the Komenda Edina Eguafo-Abrem Municipality of the Central Region have raised concerns about the inconsistent supply of premix fuel, which is affecting smooth fishing activities during this Christmas period.
During a visit to the Edina fishing market to assess whether fishing activities are thriving, it has become apparent that fishermen are not securing regular catches due to the erratic fuel supply after observing over the past week.
In an interview with Madam Araba Eyinba, a fishmonger, she lamented the scarcity of premix fuel, which has compelled fishermen to purchase petrol and diesel at exceedingly expensive fuel pumps.
Stressing that these have contributed to the rise of prices of fish at the market as these fishermen sold out to them at a high price, and they have no option but to add theirs to it.
Another fishmonger, Madam Efua Esoun, notes that aside from the irregular supply of premix fuel, which is not forthcoming, other items that fishermen purchase to support them before setting off to sea have become very expensive.
Sometimes, they spend two to five days at sea before returning home. “This season is particularly challenging for the fishermen to catch more fish”, she added.
