Ex-President Akufo-Addo’s Statue Vandalism, a Disgrace to Our Democracy- NPP
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has strongly condemned the vandalism of the statue of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Efiankwanta Roundabout in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis of the Western Region, describing the act as barbaric and shameful.
Speaking at a press briefing, Issah Fuseini, the Western Regional Communications Officer of the NPP, stated that the statue was erected by the chiefs in the region to honour the numerous developmental projects initiated by the former president and not by the NPP or Akufo-Addo himself.
He lamented the destruction, saying it has set a dangerous precedent for political rivalry.
“This shameful act should serve as a warning to the perpetrators that the NDC will not remain in power forever. It is important to respect the legacy of past leaders regardless of political affiliations,” he noted.
Issah Fuseini called on chiefs, the clergy, and other stakeholders to condemn the act and urged the police to arrest the Member of Parliament for Sekondi, Hon. Blay Armah Nyamekye, who he accused of orchestrating the destruction.
“We call on the police to, as a matter of urgency, arrest Hon. Blay Armah Nyamekye, as intelligence suggests he was behind this disgraceful act. Such lawlessness must not go unpunished,” he added.
Reacting to allegations by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the act was carried out by NPP-affiliated thugs, Issah Fuseini rubbished the claims, describing them as baseless and politically motivated.
He explained that the NDC had initially threatened to destroy the statue when it was commissioned, proving their hostility towards the project.
Under no circumstances, according to him, would the NPP engage in such acts of disrespect to its own legacy. He emphasized the need for civility and tolerance in Ghana’s political discourse.
